		<description>You're sort of implying that it's possible to gain muscle whilst losing belly fat, which is apparently quite difficult to do. From what I've read it seems that the purpose of lifting weights is to maintain muscle whilst losing fat. One way the body reduces its metabolic rate is by getting rid of unused muscle, and therefore you reach a plateau once your body has reduced its calorie expenditure to match the amount of calories you're consuming. People typically try to break the plateau by reducing their calorie intake even further until eventually they put their body into a survival state, and then it is practically impossible to lose that last bit of fat as your body would rather shed its muscle first, so you end up with an extreme case of "skinny-fat". So lifting weights may not be necessary for getting from fat to normal, but for getting from normal to lean it is pretty vital.</description>
