The Detox Diet was created so that people who followed it would rid their body of harmful toxins. The toxins might not only be from processed foods or preservatives used in the food we eat daily, but alcohol, cigarette smoke, perfume, oral contraceptives, cleaning supplies and pesticides!
How the Detox Diet Works
The theory behind the Detox Diet is that when toxins build up in your body, sickness, disease and cancer can result.
Periodically eliminating the toxins keeps them from building up, which some experts claim keeps you healthier and raises your chances of living longer. Other scientists argue that the body has adapted and learned how to naturally expel toxins and any such diet is dangerous.
Following are foods that are to be eaten while on the Detox Diet: fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, rice, grains, beans, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, fish and non-carbonated tea.
Part of the success with the Detox Diet comes from the high volume of water you are supposed to consume to flush toxins out. The fresh foods are low in calorie, and when overall intake is lowered, more of the excess can be burned off.
The hard part of the Detox Diet comes from all of the foods that need to be avoided. The list includes: any type of sugar or artificial sweetener, dairy products, wheat and gluten products, corn, caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, yeast and high fat foods.
The Detox Diet should be started gradually as it cleanses your system and help the organs process toxins out. The diet usually lasts for two weeks and should not be done more than two or three times every year. A Detox Diet doesn’t claim to have any guaranteed weight loss, just a healthier way to live.
Not all Detox Diets are the same. Some stress moderation, and for shorter periods of time. Other Detox proponents have a regimented system to follow for two whole months to clean your system out. Experts of the diet recommend changing your diet afterwards to keep your system healthy for the future.
